Upgrading for Clicks (and Scrolls)

I’ve always believed in squeezing every ounce of life out of my gadgets. By that, I mean using them right up to the edge of their usefulness. It’s not always the most practical approach, especially when the hassle of dealing with a failing device outweighs the cost of replacing it. (I’m guilty of doing the same with my cars, even though I know maintenance costs eventually climb almost exponentially.)

Some of my friends take a more pragmatic approach: they sell their older gear on the secondhand market and use the proceeds to offset the cost of an upgrade. Me? I tend to get attached. I even go so far as to name my gadgets and imagine little personalities for them. My car is “Miggy,” my phone is “Gaston,” and my laptop goes by “Delton” (spoiler: it’s a Dell).

So when my trusty mouse started acting up, I knew its end-of-life was near. I’ve had this Logitech MX Anywhere 2 for years, and what impressed me most was its ability to work on almost any surface. It’s been a sturdy companion, but lately the right button has grown finicky, sometimes requiring two or three clicks to register. After months of humming and hawing (and a timely promotional discount), I finally decided it was time to let go and order a replacement.

The Logitech MX Anywhere 3S

My choice: the Logitech MX Anywhere 3S. It’s the upgraded model, offering a higher-DPI sensor and quieter clicks than the MX Anywhere 3.

Here are some of the key differences I’ve noticed between the MX Anywhere 2 and the 3S:

  • Marginally lighter than the MX Anywhere 2
  • Higher DPI for improved precision
  • USB-C fast charging (goodbye, micro-USB cables)
  • MagSpeed scroll wheel for smoother, faster scrolling
  • Slightly more compact form factor

After years of loyal service, my MX Anywhere 2 has earned its retirement. In its place, the MX Anywhere 3S now joins the family - lighter, sharper, and quieter, yet ready to carry the same responsibilities. I haven’t settled on a name just yet, maybe I'll just choose "Logi".
